History of Tae Kwon Do

What is Tae Kwon Do?

Tae Kwon Do literally means "The Art of Hand and Foot", Tae meaning Foot, Kwon meaning Hand and Do meaning Art, Way or Method. It is a Korean Martial Art and a combat sport. It is a form of mental as well as physical training. It is the national sport of Korea, an Olympic sport and is the fastest growing martial art in the world.

Although having roots in the ancient orient, Tae Kwon Do developed to its present form relatively recently. It was inaugurated by its founder Major General Choi Hong Hi, 9th Dan Master in 1955.

Tae Kwon Do was introduced to the United Kingdom in 1967 by the now 9th Dan Master Rhee Ki Ha.

Tae Kwon Do incorporates many facets such as self defence, flexibility, discipline, fitness and confidence building.
