Patterns What is a pattern? A central part of the Tae Kwon Do syllabus is the teaching of Patterns. These are similar in concept to Kata in Karate. A pattern is a series of pre-defined techniques played out as if facing an imaginary opponent. Each grading that a student undertakes will involve perfoming one or more patterns which increase in complexity as the grade rises. Each pattern consists of a set number of techniques performed in a pre-defined sequence. Each has a meaning which must be learnt and understood. For more information about the concept of patterns see the ITF Patterns page. Patterns and Grades The following table highlights the patterns which must be learnt for each grading. Click on the name of the pattern to display more details. | Pattern Name | Grade | | Saju Jirugi * | 10th Kup | | Chon-Ji | 9th Kup | | Dan-Gun | 8th Kup | | Do-San | 7th Kup | | Won-Hyo | 6th Kup | | Yul-Gok | 5th Kup | | Joong-Gun | 4th Kup | | Toi-Gye | 3rd Kup | | Hwa-Rang | 2nd Kup | | Choong-Moo | 1st Kup | | Kwang-Gae | 1st Dan | | Po-Eun | 1st Dan | | Ge-Baek | 1st Dan | | Eui-Am | 2nd Dan | | Choong-Jang | 2nd Dan | | Juche | 2nd Dan | | Sam-Il | 3rd Dan | | Yoo-Sin | 3rd Dan | | Choi-Yong | 3rd Dan | | Yong-Gae | 4th Dan | | Ul-Ji | 4th Dan | | Moon-Moo | 4th Dan | | So-San | 5th Dan | | Se-Jong | 5th Dan | | Tong-Il | 6th Dan | * Saju Jirugi is technically an exercise rather than a pattern. |
